I agree with you, I think when Brienne shouted 'sword' she made some kind of deal with Stoneheart to bring Jaime to her/the BwB.

But I can't see Brienne keeping her part of that bargain. She did what she had to do to save Pod (and Hunt and herself, but imo it was mostly about Pod). How's that line about 'even the lie was not without honour'?
Her oath was to Catelyn, and Stoneheart is not Catelyn. Stoneheart is almost the anti-Catelyn. I can't wait to see how it will all play out, but Brienne won't just deliver Jaime to SH to be killed. Yes, you're right, this is indeed where Ned tells Bran he's a squirrel (a flashback when Bran has been "punished" for climbing by having to spend the night in the Godswood and he ends up sleeping in the trees) and great catch about the COTF. (I have, quite honestly, forgotten a lot of Dance, since I only read it once, and mostly remember the Theon (and Jaime!) chapters!)

I don't think Bloodraven orchestrated Bran's fall simply because that makes him so powerful that the entire story would be a little diminished by it. However, I do think the Starks all have some kind of huge role in the Otherpocalypse that's coming, just like Daenerys does (Ice & Fire!!) and that Bran had to go North, somehow. That doesn't absolve Jaime from pushing him, of course, but I think somehow or other, Bran wouldn't have left Winterfell with Ned, as originally planned.

I was REEEEALLY struck by the hot pools/volcanic activity stuff this time around, because I'm actively trying to work out clues about the Starks and so on.

I agree that Bran's knowledge of Winterfell will be critical when/if we get TWoW. (I WANT IT NOW!! *grabby hands*) :D Hopefully with my terribly slow rereading pace, we'll get it before I finish the reread!Regina Thornehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00167219391973327753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8430072999175569319.post-79676464702657204682015-08-31T08:51:33.838-07:002015-08-31T08:51:33.838-07:00Well, here we go again...
I love this chapter, an...Well, here we go again...
I love this chapter, and your observations. I haven't read this chapter in quite some time, but isn't it the chapter where Ned tells Bran he's 'not his son but a squirrel'? And later on, in Dance, we learn that the giants call the CotF 'squirrel people'. Another thing you mentioned is Summer's reaction when Bran starts climbing. I've seen so many discussions on the board about how Bloodraven sort of orchestrated Bran's fall, so that he'd be more willing to accept the path BR had planned for him. I never saw it that way, mostly because of Summer's reaction. And the hot pools! I think it's interesting that Wintefell was built in a non-strategical location. I mean, there are no rivers nearby, and it's quite far from the sea. But it's where the hot pools are. ;)
The other thing in this chapter is that it shows us how well Bran knows Winterfell and its secret passageways, which is something that I think will be significant in TWoW. I make connections as I'm reading to things that happen in the later books, but I forget them by the time I get to the later books, so I'm hoping that by writing everything down, I can go back and remember x or y thing :D This is certainly a series that rewards some close reading! (Also, if I don't slow down by commenting on each chapter, I feel I'll get to the end before we get book six :P)

This way when something is just so utterly WRONG, I can throw up my hands and say: "Well, that's NOT how it happened."

Yeah, I absolutely do NOT regret resigning my recapping gig for Season 5. I particularly hate what they did to Brienne and Jaime and I'd just end up ranting and raving about that!!
Regina Thornehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00167219391973327753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8430072999175569319.post-45906762708358495802015-06-25T20:18:52.799-07:002015-06-25T20:18:52.799-07:00I love your meta on GOT!
